Hold up people. Yes, in most cases a callback means that the director liked what he or she saw in your initial audition and would like to see more in order to see what role you may fit in the show. It also usually means that if you did not get a callback, thank you for coming but you will not be cast this time.

Now, NOT getting a call back does not always mean that you will not be in the show. It means that they have seen all they need to see from you at that initial audition in order to either cast you or not cast you. You may still get a call, but if you do it will likely be for ensemble at this point but no one can say for sure. I wouldn't hold my breath, so go forward and on to the next but you never know! They may have only heald callbacks for lead roles.

my two cents

When you're called back for Featured Ensemble, you're not called back for one of the leads. Typically in a play, the ensemble members are merely chorus roles, singing back-up and generally being background in a play. The Featured Ensemble, however, would probably mean that you will have a solo or speaking parts for small roles throughout the play. For specific examples, I'm going to use RENT and Wicked. In RENT, there is an ensemble in place in the show. There are, however, ensemble members who also have named characters, such as the member who plays Mrs. Jefferson, the bag lady, and the Seasons of Love soloist. She is a member of the ensemble, but she also has named parts which are smaller but more significant. In Wicked, you have the ensemble members who double to play Elphaba's father and mother at the beginning. They appear as chorus members for the rest of the show, but do play those two roles. There are also various ensemble members with solo lines within songs in the show. Those are just a few examples, but I hope that gives you an idea of what you're looking at! Break a leg!

If you weren't called back for a lead, named role, chances are you're probably going to be put in the ensemble. It sucks, but that's theatre. If you end up getting a role as a part of the "Featured Ensemble", as opposed to a regular "Ensemble", then you're probably, but not for sure, going to be given a one-line solo or a couple speaking lines in the show. So to answer your question, if you're CAST as "Featured Ensemble", you'll probably be a more prominent ensemble member.

A callback is like stage 2 of the audition process. It means they want to see you again with a smaller group of people to determine if you're right for this part or that part. It is possible (though unlikely) to still get in the show even if you weren't called back. Sometimes they just don't need to see you again.

A call back is the next step in the audition. If the director did not cast, or could not make up his/her mind on the casting, they can narrow down the field by calling back the people they are interested in for a second audition. You may have a different part, or may have not passed the first audition - you should get a call/note/whatever either way, though.

A callback is a list of people that they would like to see back for the next set of auditions.

If your name is not on the list, then unfortunately the audition process is over for you and you were not asked back.

Don't get down if that is the case, maybe it just wasn't the right play for you, keep trying!

A call back is like a second interview. It means you're one step closer in the process.

All it means is that they want to see you again that's all, no guarantees one way or another.
Hope you get in!

call backs mean they had a hard time deciding who should be the part so they have to see the people again to make their finale choice
