Why diamonds? Why don't women put out for something useful like a lesson on how maps work?

You don't understand female psychology. Women don't want something useful. In fact, they don't even want something pretty. What they want is something EXPENSIVE. That's all that matters to them: They don't care what utility a thing has, what they care about is how much money you spent to get it for them. More accurately, they care what FRACTION of your money you spent to get it for them; if you're poor, a simple gold ring will do, but if you're insanely rich, you'll probably have to get them two lamborghinis and a cruise yacht in order to get the same response. Women don't care about the thing itself, what they are trying to do is to get you to 'demonstrate your love' by spending as large a fraction of your money on them as you can. It is totally irrational, and extremely wasteful, but it's just the way women are.

Hmmm maybe because every time a woman turns around men are trying to teach how to use a map, how to talk politics, how to fix cars and all that other boring stuff--why put out for something that is being forced on one anyway? Nope I'll just sit here a look pretty till you buy me a diamond OK?

Personally I know how to read maps.
As for jewelery I own a watch (my grandmother's), a gold chain(my godmother's), a crucifix( I bought myself), and a few pieces of costume jewelery. No diamonds.
Why some men think of all women as gold diggers is beyond me. You want a woman to put out, treat her with dignity and respect. Do something thoughtful that is unexpected.
Personally I'd rather be loved and treated well than have a diamond and I believe the majority of women feel the same way.

I think as many men like diamonds as women, especially among the younger culture. And in terms of learning how to read a map or whatever, men are the ones who won't read maps, if we're going to go by stereotypes.

Maybe you should get a clue and stop trying to get women with your large....map skills. Your mistake is that you are trying to apply logic to how women "should" work, instead of how they "do" work. Which by definition is illogical. When you figure this out, maybe you'll better your luck with the women.
