My (now deceased) stepmother after leaving my father for her lover pretended to be my friend in order to get revenge on my father for divorce court proceedings. I never spoke to her again after discovering the tape recorder but I still wonder if that was legal!!??

The proper answer is ....it depends!

Depending on the situation:

Are we talking phone conversation?
-If so, then most states require a court order or consent of all parties. EXCEPT, if you record a phone conversations over radio waves (portable phones intercepted by a radio receiver). Tricky but it can be done.
-if not phone conversations, then location could play a roll in the legality. If the recording is in a public area, walking outside, in a room of other people, etc, then there is no expectation of privacy and generally the taping would be OK.

I hope this helps! You could call the state's attorney general's office and ask about the applicable state laws regarding recording.

Good luck!

Mostly YES! but some states like Oregon only require a one person consent - if you are the one consenting and part of the conversation then it's okay. but be VERY CAREFUL! Also if you were the one being recorded - I would go to the president myself and make a few threats about the person who recorded you without your knowledge. I would also put it in writing so that if you ever lost your job you would have proof that the pres. heard privileged information against you sorry i am in a hurry here so I hope this made sense!.

It IS illegal unless ALL parties involved know.
The police have to get a warrant to be able to phone tap.
The government can do whatever they want, according to the new anti-terror laws.
