With a 2 stroke, the bang happens every time the piston gets to the top. On the way down more fuel and air is sucked in while the exhaust is pushed out.
On a 4 stroke, valves control air & fuel going in and exhaust going out. Suck (down), Squeeze (up), Bang (down), Blow (up). So the piston moves up and down twice (4 strokes) for every power cycle.

The 4 stroke is going a million. suck 2. squeeze 3. bang 4. blow. (intake of air gas / compression of air gas / ignition of compressed air gas / exhaust of burnt air gas) All this is executed between the cylinder head and the suitable of the piston, (so there is largely one chamber the place all this happens). Valves interior the cylinder head enable the gas combination in, close for compression stroke and firing stroke the open for the exhaust stroke. the two stroke combines all the above into 2 strokes, by way of utilising the piston to interchange the function of the valves in head of the 4 stroke plus the section below the piston (i.e. the crankcase). So there are 2 chambers the place this happens. there are various tubes and holes (referred to as ports) interior the cylinder wall all at differnt heights. a million. between the carburettor and the crankcase, 2. between the crankcase and the better area of the cylinder 3. between the cyclinder and the exhaust pipe. to maintain it elementary we initiate from while the engine is first kicked over. while the piston is going up, it opens the port between the carburettor and the crankcase so as that gas/ air is sucked into the crankcase. while the piston is going down it closes the port from the carburettor and forces the aggregate throughout the time of the subsequent port previous the suitable of the piston into the combustion chamber. via fact the piston maintains it closes this port and starts off to compress the aggregate. ( on the comparable time the subsequent lot of combination is being sucked into the crankcase.) This the suck and squeeze the two happening on the comparable time. it is one stroke. while the piston gets to the suitable of the cylinder the spark plug ignites the gas which pushes the piston backtrack the cylinder, via fact the piston is going down it opens the final port to the exhaust pipe. the form of the exhaust pipe helps to suck the burnt combination out, and this is pushed alongside by way of the subsequent lot of combination bobbing up from the crankcase. this is the bang and blow mixed into the 2d stroke. the full technique is non-end and a splash greater technical even inspite of the undeniable fact that it would supply you the basics.

A 4 stroke engine has a separate systems for oil and fuel.
A 2 stroke engine uses oil and fuel that have been mixed together.
A four stroke engines uses 4 cycles:
1.) Intake (piston goes down, sucks in gas and air mixture.
2.) Compression (piston goes up, compresses gas/air mixture.
3.) Power (spark plug ignites gas/air, piston goes down.
4.) Exhaust (piston goes up, pushes out burnt exhaust gases.
Usually two valves open and close to let in the fuel and let out the exhaust. Some higher performance engines have 3, 4 or even 6 valves).
A two stoke engines uses 2 cycles:
1.) Intake (piston goes down, sucks in gas/air and oil mixture through a port in the side of the cylinder instead of an intake valve. Piston goes back up, covers the port, and then compresses the air/ fuel/oil mixture.
2.) Power (spark plug ignites gas/air, piston goes down.) As the piston goes down it uncovers the exhaust port in opposite side of the cylinder which allows the burnt exhaust gases to escape.
2 stroke engines rev quicker because there are less moving parts, but they pollute more because they burn oil.
4 stroke engines are more efficient because you can control the time the valves open and close by changing the cam profile. Cams that keep the valves open longer, allow more fuel into the cylinder which create more power, but use more fuel. Cams that keep the valves open shorter have better fuel efficiency.
2 stroke engines don't have valves or cams. They use 2 ports or "holes" in the side of cylinder to let the gases in and out. You can't change this port size unless you really know a lot about engine designs.
Most garden equipment and old outboard engines are 2 stroke because they're more compact. So are older dirtbikes.

The main difference is that the 2 stroke does not have the valves that a four stroke. That is ` The two-stroke cycle of an internal combustion engine differs from the more common four-stroke cycle by completing the same four processes (intake, compression, power, exhaust) in only two strokes of the piston rather than four' see wikipedia on-line it has a great pictorial view

$ stroke engine works on 4 principles of the combustion chamber(where the pistons are)
Suck = draws the vapour in via the carburetor.air and fuel mixture
Squeeze = piston goes up and compresses the mixture
Bang = the spark plug ignites the mixture and the piston is driven back down
Blow = the exhaust vapours are expelled from the combustion chamber and the whole cycle is repeated.....
2 stroke engine uses a mixture of petrol and oil and has only 2 actions...the suck is combined with the blow and the squeeze/bang bit are also combined.....

A 2 stroke goes BANG every time the piston comes up and has ports for fuel in and out. A four stroke goes BANG every second time the piston comes up and has valves to control entry and exit.

a four strok engine means that it takes four strokes of the piston to complete a cycle, meaning one for intake one for compressions and ignition, one for expansions and one for exhaust. The two stroke combines them and cuts it in half. The four stroke will give you more power on the top end but two stroke gives you more of a quick response power.

guard rail has it
the moron above me is clueless
wiggy said it when he stated a 2 stroke 500 will have the same power as a 1000
they just have a different type of power band

Well said Guard Rail Jim.
If it helps also, as a [ very rough guide ] a 2 stroker makes about the same power as a 4 stroke of double the size. EG:
A 500cc 4cyl makes approx 240BHP. (MotoGP class)
A 990cc 4cyl makes approx 240BHP. (MotoGP class)
I repeat, this is only a rough guide however.
