One word sums up the internet: Communication
It allows computers to communicate with each other, which allows your computer to communicate with other computers. If those are business computers, it allows you to communicate with your bank to see your account, if you want to attend an auction, it allows you to communicate with ebay. If you want to meet new people, you can communicate with them via websites like My Space, Facebook, message boards, etc. If you want to play games with people it lets you communicate with them and do this over the internet. If you want to listen to music, it allows you to do that.
Before the internet came along, there was a "Media Channel" If you wanted people to become aware of your business, or you wanted to publish a story, or pretty much anything, you had to make a deal with somebody in the Media Channel (magazines, newspapers, tv, yellow pages) in order to be heard. Often times whether you succeeded had more to do with your marketing than the quality of your service.
The internet changed all that and allows anyone to communicate with anyone else without having to go through the media channels. Some internet companies became giants without ever placing a single advertisement, anywhere. Word-of-mouth is very powerful on the internet, and it has enabled the free exchange of ideas better than at any other point in history.
