Call it what you want. Strategically it makes perfect sense to keep 130,000 dug in US troops right next to Iran. Maybe you haven't heard, but Iran is supporting terrorism all over the middle east, supplying IED's to insurgents in Iraq, has threatened to wipe Israel off the map, threatened a terrorist war against the US if attacked, and who is pursuing nuclear weapons. Did you ever think that maybe.....just maybe....this isn't just about Iraq anymore???

For starters, some of us do not define the US as an empire. We are a sovereign nation with ties to the Middle East because of our foreign oil dependency. And we have a strong alliance with Israel. Start with a valid premise and reach a valid conclusion.
We have a legitimate interest in keeping Iraq out of terrorist hands, because we helped dismantle their dictatorship. Get this straight and your conclusions will follow.

Way to prove your ultimate ignorance yet again. First, we don't have an "empire" in America, you know it's that little "by the people, for the people" thing. Representative government? If you don't like those in power, don't vote for them the next time? Any of this ring a bell? Beware of the voices.

is Germany, Japan, or South Korea part of our "empire?" Last I checked, they are free, sovereign countries with great economies and very high standards of living. All three of them have long term US military presence. What countries are you referring to as being a part of our "empire?"

Yes you are right and those who don't believe are not very clever people. To put it simply it is about keeping China in check. The US were worried if they hadn't taken control of the middle east then China now needing huge amounts of oil may well have decided to try and take control of it themselves. With the US now having a major say in who gets what oil from the middle east China are firmly in their grasp. For now. China is like a caged lion right now. Being fed on scraps. If one day that lion happens to become to big for it's restraints and get's loose, it is not going to be very happy with it's handlers.

Now,now. The Republicans are saying that Iraq is the new South Korea.
That means that now they're admitting to the fact that they plan on having troops there for at least the next 50 years.I think they'll find that it won't be as pleasant in Baghdad as it is in Seoul.
The rest they'll just lie their teeth out denying.

CIA had done this secretly for years like an example Iran in 1953. Now they are just doing this in the open, I guess they needed the military contracts.
