The main reasons to install a LAN is to have:
1. the same programs and files being accessed by multiple people.
2. The need to rapidly share data between workers.
3. To cut down on the number of printers needed. Instead of 1 per system, you can have 1 or 2 on the network.
4. To make it easier to back up data.
5. To increase productivity in the office workflow.

If you look at your workflow, are there times when people are making data disks (or memory sticks) of files and walking them over to someone else's desk to have them look at it and make changes (little fun-fact - we call that "sneaker-net"). Is there a need for internet access from more than 1 worker's desk? Any more, setting up a LAN is inexpensive, and can make a lot of sense in a multi-user environment. And since wireless routers are so cheap right now, you don't even need to have a cable company come in to wire everyone up. Hope this helps.

If there are resources to share (such as printers, faxes, files, etc), then a business would require a LAN. Also, some companies (depending on size) have an internal web page for daily news to their employees.

If there are more then one computer, it makes a lot of sense to have a local network.

...and by the way, not just in the office but also at home!
