It would be an essay, although I think a better choice would have been "extended essay", an in-depth study of a limited topic within a subject.
Essays are usually short(er) works of non-fiction prose, presenting the writer's opinions about a given topic.
Novels, of course, are long works of fiction.
Memoirs are non-fiction, but they are a shorter, sub-class of autobiography, usually about only a part of the author's life rather than the whole.
And poems are of all sorts - lyrical, narrative, epic, etc. but wouldn't (usually) fit the definition given.
