1953, he would have most likely gotten rich by dodging WWII and profitting that way, not during the depression.

During the depression the people who got rich(er) were the ones who already had money. In the 20's everyone had money, but the highest people had tons. The ones who invested properly stayed around and rich in the begining of the depression, then were able to manipulate it to get richer during it.

For the time period, meat packing, manufacturing, and other factories were the way to make the most money. Manufacturing needed to be of goods that required replacement during the depression (ie. drill bits, not luxury items like washing machines).
Just follow what was needed and you'll see who had the money. Oil is another good one.

Near the end of the depression these people were the ones setup with factories that could be converted to weapons manufacturing.
Once WWII started the US did the normal thing and supplied weapons to whoever had money-that made it easy for arms makers to make tons of cash. Cars stopped production as did many other industries, that was to focus on weapons.

Basically though, anyone who managed to avoid the war and get a job did well.

Lee Iacocca was a medical denial in WWII. He went to college instead and ended up being incredibly influential at the Ford motor company by the early 60's and eventually became President of the company.

The economic system runs in cycles. There are u.s.a.and downs. Rich individuals put money into the inventory marketplace throughout the elaborate instances and keep the inventory till instances get greater and get even richer. The center elegance and deficient as a rule can not do this. The important issues within the U.S.A. on the second was once precipitated by way of the Investment Banks and Developers. The Banks and Developers bought estate to individuals they knew didn't qualify. The Savings and Loans and Developers did the identical factor within the eighty's. The U.S.A. will rebound by way of the center of 2009. If now not then I will turn out to be quite worried. The Presidential elections consistently end result the U.S.A. economic system the contributors of Congress searching for to take again the White House don't seem to be going to permit the Party of the sitting President and his Administration to appear well within the yr of the election. Their probabilities of taking again the White House are larger if the President and his Administration appears unhealthy notably at the economic system. Anytime the U.S.A. economic system suffers it results the sector to a couple measure, however the Philippines like different nations will modify and live to tell the tale. Americans don't seem to be completely satisfied with the economic system, however we've come to assume and be given that we pass via this approximately each 8 years.

There were not a lot of new fortunes in 1953. Likely your character would be someone (or from a family) who was rich before the Depression and came through it still rich. Not everyone was wiped out in the Depression. A good example would be the Rockefeller family. Rich on oil money before and after. Or the Ford family for that matter. If you do want a newish source of wealth then it would be commercial aviation/airframe manufacture (think Boeing).

He would be in the business of making weapons of mass destruction. In 1953, WWII was over for a pretty short time and the US was involved in Korea and the French were getting really embroiled in what became Vietnam. And, President Eisenhower was warning us about the military industrial complex.
