JOSEPHINE of the 80's band Phantom Blue

Born in Indonesia, Josephine started playing classical piano at age eleven. At seventeen, she was sick of classical piano and the rebel in her surfaced. Against her mother’s wishes she took up the guitar. Josephine holds the distinction of being a graduate of G.I.T., which she can part way credit to the early instruction by Alex Skolnick of Testament, who was also a major influence along with George Lynch . She has played and toured throughout Indonesia with her group appearing in 1992 on the music show "Kharisma" as a featured artist with the group "Def Leppard ". A versatile lead and rhythm guitarist, who is also proficient as a keyboard and bass player. Josephine won the " Best Female Guitarist " award at the 2nd annual Rock City News Awards. The award category was sponsored by Gibson Guitars who presented Josephine with a brand new custom Gibson.

All the players that are mentioned above are great, but one woman that really stands out is Jennifer Batten. What makes Jen different from some of the women mentioned, is that she is a world-class shredder and is held in the same regard as people like Joe Satriani and Steve Vai.

She was considered a cult guitar favorite, until Michael Jackson selected her over 100 other guitarists to play in his touring band throughout the Nineties. Part of her appeal was her ability to play the legendary Eddie Van Halen solo in "Beat It" note-for-note.

After releasing a solo album in 1997, "Jennifer Batten's Tribal Rage," she was asked by the legendary Jeff Beck (widely considered to be one of the greatest guitarists in the world), to join his band as second guitarist. She spent three years with Jeff, recording and touring in support of his albums "Who Else!" and "You Had It Coming."

She is currently finishing work on her third solo album, "Off The Deep End" and you can read more on her web site www.batten.com.

Finally, for more cool, world-class women guitarist, you should check out an album called "La Guitara: Gender Bending Strings" on Vanguard Records. This disc showcases a sampling of the world's finest women guitar players. "La Guitara" features artists versed in a variety of musical genres, from classical, to folk, to blues, to jazz and rock. Stand outs include the brilliant classical guitarist Sharon Isbin, blues player Rory Block, the mind-blowing Kaki King and, of course, Jennifer Batten
