I am sorry to say that you have not provided enough information for me to deicer the film title that you are looking for from a number of other films with the same plot. The thing about the movies is that once a studio has produced a film that is a hit, other studio duplicate that film and elements from that film. So, eventually you have a large number of films that are exactly the same, but with different actors and based in different towns or parts of th country.

Okay.. the haunting was not about a families house haunted dad possessed.. The main reason for the ghost was the father.. even in the remake.. but both movies themselves were about the people who had nothing to do with the family staying there. . both versions were based on the book by Shirley Jackson.

An American Haunting was supposedly about a family house that was haunted.. but it was a bit more complicated than the father being possessed.. (he sort of was... but not) I think this is the one you are thinking of..

Amityville Horror was also about a haunted house where the father gets possessed..

this one, the remake is fairly close to the original..

I've seen haunted with aidan quinn and kate beckinsale. I loved that movie. and I've seen the new version of the haunting but didn't like it very much. and your first answerer (bugaboo) talked about another movie that was excellent. it was called don't go to sleep. it was a made for tv movie in the 80s that was better than most horror movies today. another good haunting movie is the changeling. only the scariest movie EVER in my opinion. haunts me to this day at the age of 28.
