I recently purchased a 05 plate used VW golf 2.0 SDi .
There is a noticeable noise on start up which only occurs a few times, it sounds like a cross between a 'whooping and clanking' noise. It only does this about twice and it clears after about 30 sec.

The garage says it is the air-con pump and it is fine.
Has anyone heard of this, or should I get them to investigate it further?

It's possible the bearings in the A/C clutch are on the way out. Yes you should have it looked at further before it seizes up and troughs out the belt.

because of the fact that's not considered a DIY activity why could you ask? while you're taking the vehicle to a VW dealership or a Bosch accepted storage they are going to do as mandatory. The pressures created by ability of those pumps is so severe that severe harm or loss of existence can consequence from incorrect assembly.

SO TRY IT THIS WAY FIRST......................

1. START THE VEHICLE UP WITHOUT THE A/C ON AND SEE IF THE NOISE IS THERE.

2. START THE VEHICLE UP WITH THE A/C ON AND SEE IF THE NOISE IS THERE.

IF THE NOISE IS THERE WITH THE A/C ON IT COULD BE THE COMPRESSOR AND NOT THE CLUTCH.

IF THE NOISE IS NOT THERE WITH THE A/C ON IT COULD BE THE COMPRESSOR CLUTCH ASSEMBLY AND THIS WOULD NEED TO BE REPAIRED ASAP.

THE CLUTCH BEARING IS MADE OF STEEL AND THE COMPRESSOR SHAFT OR NOSE PIECE IS MADE OF ALUMINUM AND THE BEARING WILL DESTROY THE SHAFT WHICH IN TURN WILL FORCE YOU TO BUY A COMPRESSOR ASSEMBLY COMPLETE WITH A CLUTCH ALONG WITH A RECEIVER DRIER AND YOU WILL HAVE EVACUATE AND RECHARGE THE A/C SYSTEM.

BUT YES IF THE VEHICLE IS UNDER WARRANTY JUST TAKE IT TO THE DEALER AND HAVE THEM REPAIR IT FOR YOU FREE OF CHARGE.

Pop along to Haldfords, and pick up some 'Air Conditioning Cleaner' It's just like a spray can. You start the car up, with the air con running, and following the directions, just leave the can in one of the footwells for about five minutes to get to work. I'm not saying this is the answer....but it might help.....costs about £12.00 i think,. .

Sounds to me like you are hearing your fuel pump load up . Try listening and just turn your key on (without starting car) a couple of times for a few seconds and see if thats the noise you are hearing

Ask the garage to start another similar car and let them point out the same noise....

If your car is under 60,000 miles it will be under warranty.
Go to a VW dealer...

Come on, do you really think "a 'whooping and clanking' noise" is fine? Do you really think it did that brand new? If it did then who would buy them?
