I have a tree that has sprouted up, the odd thing is it seems to have 3 different kinds of leaves on it right now. One kind is tear drop shaped, there are very few of those. The smaller leaves have 9 lobes off of the central vein. The larger leaves have 5 or 7 lobes off of the central vein. All are dark green, slightly lighter on the underside. The leaves alternate on the branches, and there are no thorns. The tree is very young, largest part is maybe 2 inches in diameter, and the bark is smooth. Wish I could post a picture of the leaves, I scanned them just in case...

Sounds like an ELM, or a SUMAC. They spread by suckers..roots from a tree is the surrounding area. There really isn't any way to stop them..besides constantly cutting them down. Without a picture..it's hard to determine. With the smooth bark, Im leaning more towards the sumac. Im not sure where your located.
