If you are in the UK the answer is yes.
Only the seller pays the agent, not the buyer.

The only person that pays the real estate agent is the person who has asked them to sell their home for them. They pay a percentage of the sale price, usually 3 to 7 percent.

As a home buyer, not seller, you won't have to pay anyone. And any real estate agent worth their weight will take you on to help you find a home you like, since it means:
1. Either they will sell you a home that they have the listing for and will make their money from the seller.
2. They can show you a home that another real estate agent has listed and they will share in the percentage with the real estate agent that has the listing.

So, get yourself a real estate agent that works hard. They'll find you a house and you won't pay, the seller will.

Good luck finding your new home! Don't forget the house warming party!

No an estate agent is the agent of the seller and the seller pays his agents fees. You are the buyer and the agents fee comes out of the purchase price you pay so in sense you do pay indirectly. If you buy straight from the seller the house should be a bit cheaper.

absolutely, you don't pay anything.

Remember who is paying them the commission though. They think its the seller so will be loyal to them.

In actual fact its you that ends up paying the estate agent through the price of the house but they don't see it that way.

For more expensive housing you can engage a search agent for which you would pay.
