I am selling a personal computer that holds finances and home business info. Can I get a wiper that will destroy everything and never be brought up again? Is this a decent way to clean up computers that I already have so I can start them from scratch as if they were new? Thanks for the help!

Try the Killdisk utility, the free version only allows one pass but you can run it multiple times, or buy it. Supposedly it passes NSA security specifications.
Also you can download the Ultimate Boot disk and there are several disk wiping utilities on there. See below for the link.

remember to wipe a hard drive you can not boot from it first so you need to boot from a floppy or CD/DVD.

Make sure that who ever you sell the machine to knows that it can't be booted and needs to have an OS installed.

Many companies that handle finance or other secure data think the only correct way to wipe out disks containing this sort of information is a shredding machine. Not your desktop shredder obviously, but one designed for machinery shredding.

That may be overboard... but if you want to achieve the same sort of effect, take the disk drive to bits and heat the platters up with a gas torch until they melt or glow. You'd need to buy a new disk drive afterwards of course.

Alternatively, you can buy or find shareware disk wiper programs that may be secure enough for you.

Me I just format the disk drive as EXT3 (ie I install Iinux on it) and fill the disk with random stuff then reinstall Windows.

Remove the drive and smash it to smithereens. Thats the only sure way.
