I often find myself saying one word and then saying five other similar words to get to the word I really want to use to convey my meaning. I would like to become more precise with chosing my words as well as timely. I don't feel comfortable pausing for more than a few seconds to come up with a word.

Any advice or resources?

join a local toastmaster club, they practice public speaking and you meet a lot of great people there.

also practice one or two words a day to improve the use of your language skills, for example

at work
you say, I admire your work, instead of saying, I like your work.

just work with a few words, don't try to take on a lot at a time.

I wish you success

Unfortunately, you may have to do what you don't like--pause. Although I am nervous in speaking in front of others, I have been praised on speaking in front of a group. I do a combination of pausing and thinking before I speak. I speak slower, too while my mind is gathering my thoughts and sentences. What also helps if you're speaking in front of a small group is asking, "What do you think?" which can buy you some time and then while they answer you, you're thinking of more points to tell them and then can say, "I was also thinking....."

You must take a Public speaking course at your local community college, that will help all your fears or lack of language.
