Wow, HUGE question.

The Inca were:

* an empire in along the western side of South America from Ecuador and Chile (and part of Bolivia).

* they had nothing to do with Mexico, Aztecs, or Mayans

* they had large cities

* their main language was Quechua, which is still spoken

* they were not the first large empire in South America.

* they had a data storage system called the Quipu: it was several strings of different colors and thickness, with knots tied in specific ways. This system could hold an enormous amount of information about things going on in the empire.

* they had messenger relay runners who could transport messages (using the Quipu) across the empire within 48 hours

* they were outstanding astronomers

* Spanish smallpox killed some of the leadership before the Spanish arrived. This caused an internal civil war between two Incan princes who both claimed the throne.

* The Spanish pretended to be ambassadors and lured the Inca leaders into an ambush, where their entourage was mostly unarmed. The Spanish ambush killed most of the unarmed warriors and they took the Incan king prisoner.

* The Inca were master architects. They built cities, pyramids, and large suspension bridges.

* The Inca are one of the few American Indians who used sails in their boats.

Too much to answer on this page....I'm a bit of a geek in regards to ancient cultures. A good book regarding the topic is "The Inca's and their ancestors: The archeology of Peru". There's also one....forget the entire title but if you google "The People of the Sun", it should come up. I know that is part of the title.
