For starters, a lot of people use guns to hunt. I have many friends who live in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan who hunt because they don't make enough money to feed themselves and their families, so they shoot animals and catch fish when they're in season. Secondly, there are many areas in the U.S. where break-ins, robbery, and assault/rape of people in their homes is very common, so having a gun to defend yourself is a necessity. Finally, the Second Amendment to the Constitution guaranteed our right to keep and bear arms because the Founding Fathers saw what happened when citizens were not allowed to carry guns but the occupying British military were. It's very easy for a military to rise up and take over a government if that country's citizens are not armed. Who's going to challenge them?

The others have a valid points as to why anyone would own a gun, but they missed one important point. There is an undercurrent in the U.S. that citizens should be allowed to keep weapons if the need occurs to take up arms against their government. While there is little chance this will occur anytime in the near future (even with the political contempt people have for the Federal government these days) this is the basic logic behind the second amendment as well as why individuals and states are allowed to form "private militias." The framers (i.e. the writers of the Constitution) sought to introduce this as another check against the government, there by limiting its action; they also recognized the Revolutionary War as a similar militia based action that may need to be repeated in the future.
Nothing like the citizens constantly, all be it quietly, threatening the government to hold down things that really do make the world nasty, corruption, serious human rights abuses, black ops on your citizens etc.

The world was a pretty bad place the night that four thug's followed me home from work and tried to run me off the road. This was years ago before cell phones were handy. I owned a business and carried money for bank drops. I had a permit to carry a firearm. I was damn glad that night that I lived in a country where I had the freedom to own and a permit to carry a firearm.

Well, farmers need guns to stop foxes from killing their stock. And police officers need guns to stop dangerous criminals from shooting other people (or the police).
And the army would be pretty lame without them too.
I agree with your sentiment. The world would be a much nicer place if people didn't occasionally act upon the urge to kill other people. Sadly, these urges aren't about to go away any time soon. In a perfect world, we wouldn't need guns, but we don't live in a perfect world.
So, even if all the good, level headed people like yourself decide that guns are bad and nobody should have them, and everyone who is honest about it hands in their guns and vows never to buy another one, you can rest assured that the crackhead who breaks into your house at 2am on a sunday morning looking for a nice dvd to pawn for a fix is most certainly going to have his handy.
And statistically, it is extremely likely that if you disturb him, he's quite likely to put a few extra holes in you just for that dvd player.
Personally, I would rather have a gun and at least have a fighting chance, coz if I don't kill him, he's gonna kill me, then probably do terrible things to my wife, and probably kill my children too.
I don't condone gun use, and in my country we are not allowed to have one, but if I lived somewhere where I could own one, I would have one just in case.

I know why we had a gun.My husband bought one when he became a legal citizen of the USA.Just because he had escaped communist Hungary where you would face serious jail time for even having a bullet in your position.
I guess it made him feel like he was an American with full rights for once in his life.
We legally sold it after a year or so because I truly believe if you own one you should be willing and able to shoot to kill.I didn't want to deal with it at that time.
My brother loves his guns and even bought his wife a $2,000.hand gun for her birthday years ago.She was an ex-MP in the US Army so there you go.

Because my wife had a stalker who broke into our home one evening.
Because at my family house in the desert we have idiots who feed the coyotes (thus causing them to lose their fear of humans and increasing the number of coyote attacks on children).
BTW - the world is that bad. You have just been insulated from reality by the people who protect you.
