I could kill somebody in self defense. In that case, I would not feel regret.

You never know what the mind is capable of. I believe anyone can commit murder. I never used to believe this until I had my 2nd child and as an infant she used to cry every 30min to 1 hr for what ever reason and after 4 days of no sleep, I just wanted to put a pillow over her face to shut her up, but I also knew it was wrong. Yes, she's still alive and now 10, but sleep deprivation can always play a picture in anger management and potential murder. Never knew I was even capable of these thoughts and serious about them that I almost acted on them. My 3rd child, I had no problem with. But I wasn't sleep deprived at all with him. Go figure.

murder is committed for a few basic reasons : jealousy, greed, desperation, to cover another crime or just plain homicidal mania
when your parents tell you off as a child they teach you the difference between right and wrong, over time this gets internalised as guilt - there is an interesting argument over whether it is nature or nurture. a recent study showed that most serial killers had higher levels of seratonin in their brains and smaller cerebral cortexes. however, so did most of the scientists conducting it
humans have found the need to kill for thousands of years, no other species is so counter-productive to its own proliferation. humans are just horrible animals
