BAD idea. "Grossly" bad, if you will. Obviously you don't quite grasp the accuracy of some of the NHL snipers out there. Even a 500 pound man wouldn't cover the entire net, and he would be unable to move. That would leave corners and gaps, and that is all a sniper needs to score. The shooters would know right where to aim, and they would hit it more times than not. It would be easy scoring. Very easy. And rebounds could easily be pushed through. Mobility and athleticism are musts for goaltending.
Besides, the guy would probably have a heart attack. A dead goalie isn't going to stop much, is he? :-)

RE:
Why don't they have grossly fat guys as hockey goalies?
Not just regular pudgy guys like me, I'm talking obscenely fat. The kind that when they need an ambulance, the fire department is cutting into a wall and putting them on a flatbed.
Put one of those guys on some skates, drape him in the team colors, put a facemask on him and he can be a...

Goalkeepers still need to be fit and active it's not as easy as you think it's often quite scary so I'd be surprised if this guy you were thinking of didn't have a heart attack! And I don't think you would find a kit big enough for a 'grossly fat' man

I'm Laurie and I've lost 60 pounds. I went from a size 14 to a size 6.Since I've lost the weight I feel great. I have lots of energy. I'm willing to do different things. I just love going out, and playing with the kids, and having fun. It's changed everything. My whole life has changed.

It would work great- You've just only gotten replies from hockey fans who are close-minded traditionalists. There are large enough people to cover the net. It's only 4'X6'. And not all people that large are completely immobile. Sumo wrestlers, for instance would be perfect. With pads on, sumo could cover it all and please gimmie a break about a rubber puck flying 100 MPH. "I'd just pummel him to death in the net" baloney. These idiots just don't wanna admit it because they think it would be cheating or some such nonsense.

He won't be able to block off the entire goal, and a player doesn't need much to net the puck if there is daylight.
Pad sizes are regulated, so even if you could find someone big enough to block off the net (it wouldn't be a human), he would essentially be in goal unprotected. I'd give him one slapshot and done (we're talking a puck of galvanized rubber coming at him in speeds of 100+ mph, how long do you think someone would last?)
We can of course continue discussing the importance of rebound control, first passes, mobility, etc. but considering the question, the two reasons given ought to give you an idea.

There was a Snickers commercial just like this a few years ago, with a fat goalie fitting right into the goal.

Because mobility is Key to a great Goal Tender,A good goal scorer would find a way to score ;all you need is some good passing to get him to commit to a shot and make him pay!
