whats the deal with this, do they actually win cases, or is it a waste of time getting one

Ambulancechasers. Go to a reputable solicitor in your area and ask about personal injury (I presume thats what you are looking at) Most of them will offer a free 15 minute appointment which will give you a very good idea of whether it is worth proceeding or not.

Bear in mind these no win no fee bandits get their money from somewhere.
