You can have problems with anything.
While I love HP Cases and other HW, I have a 2nd hand good HP that refuse to rationally upgrade Fedora 6 to 7 without wanting to delete everything on the HD - or recognize the existing HDs... !!!

I thought I heard that a foreign company (Acer maybe?) was taking over Gateway - that does not necessarily mean they will be discontinued - check google to see if that is current info or not. I have had several Gateway machines (home and work) and they have been good, but I do recall Gateway having had some tough times in the past. HP is a bigger player and should be around for a long time. My most recent laptop is an HP and I really like it, and the price difference between Gateway and HP was not significant when I was shopping a few months back.

gateway was purchased by Acer I believe.
As far as HP, I would take them over anybody at this particular time. Their product lines have made leaps and bounds over the last few years and at least they stand behind their equipment.

They could quit building either you have mentioned and it wouldn't hurt a lot of peoples feelings. The best is DELL.
