Web pages are written in HTML. Period.

But there are many additions that extend HTML, php, javascript, etc.

It's easy to code simple HTML code in an ASCII text editor. All the individual concepts are in 'buckets' - the biggest most common mistake is to accidentally tangle the 'buckets'. A simple editor like 'EditPlus' allows you see these 'buckets' as colour coded - if they are not correct, the code turns black after the error.

Too many pages of HTML code are weighed down with unnecessary garbage - the defaults are often explicitly recoded with javascript, etc. This just makes the pages load slowly.

Without HTML, I would have to write my site all in JavaScript, and I'm not all that great in that language! :)
