It's a hobby of his! Women collect shoes and handbags and Beckham collects caps. He's collected a lot more caps than he has cups LOL

years ago everytime a player of a sport played or started a match they used to get a real cap as in a hat, so now if a player plays a match it is said they have got a cap, for example david beckham has played 98 times

It's an item of clothing worn on the head to protect it from the sun. Beckham is to caps as Imelda Marcos is to shoes.
Actually Beckham earns a cap every time he plays for his country (or something like that).

hi there.
In the old days, when you represented your country in team sports (football, cricket, rugby et al) you were given a cap with the badge on it, to recognise the achievement. they still talk about being capped when you appear in a game and a full cap when you start a game.
Cheers, Steve.

It means to play for your country. I don't know whether the tradition still continues, but certainly up to the 60s, footballers would receive a cap whenever they played for their country.

When you get selected to represent your country you get a cap for every time you play. it's an actual cap that they receive but don't know if they get one for every single time they play.
