Hatred exists here (and everywhere) for not only middle eastern people, but for any other group. Not everyone hates and not everyone is hated.
All in all, I believe the 'hatred' for middle eastern people (ie muslims, who by the way are not just middle eastern) has grown as the religion has been stained by the fanatical terrorists along with the reluctance of the mainstream muslims to speak out against them.

I just moved from Seattle to Baltimore. There are many people in Baltimore of Arab and Indian descent, and the greater numbers of people who appear Middle Eastern (whether they are or not) may be beneficial because they have been here a long time and are not all foreign.

I lived in the Seattle area immediately after 9/11 and years afterward. Not only was there a show of solidary among secular and religious leaders, there was at least one Christian group in Seattle that guarded mosques to allow their Moslem neighbors to worship in peace and prevent them from being victimized by hooligans. Other than stupid acts committed by a few ignorant individuals, there was just some general suspicion that, unfortunately, could be directed to anyone who appeared Middle Eastern. In fact, some so-called patriot directed this kind of suspicion to a friend of mine who was actually Native American. That does not mean that the situation was comfortable for people of Middle Eastern descent, but even in 1978 or so when Ayatollah Khomeini oversaw the taking of American hostages, students at the University of Maryland formed a buddy system to walk Middle Eastern students to class. Remember that there is a vibrant anti-hate community flying its colors during times of social stress.

Not hatred, suspicion. After the July 11 bombings in London, who could blame someone for being nervous if a middle eastern man with a back pack came to sit next to you on the underground? Had the bombers been Japanese, people would be wary of orientals. If the bombers had been little old ladies, people would be nervous of octogenarians. It's the terrorists that have caused this suspicion, blame them.

I don't hate anyone but dislike people who support people who are trying to kill me and mine. I wonder what your view is on that particular subject you don't say?
