A faith or religion is based on belief and not necessarily on scientific evidence.

It is similar to finding the soul of a person once he dies.

However we know today that genetics and DNA theory is based upon facts and it shows how ancestral traits are carried forward from one generation to another.

It is time now that the intellectual community of India puts its heads together in establishing a time line and sort out fact from fiction.

However if the ideas put forward in a mythological stories are beneficial in establishing good moral values and good rules of conduct, then there should be no harm in accepting them.

Logical analysis has become a way of life in today's society and we cannot deny that.

As you read Ramayana today I am sure you can sort out fact from fiction. Even today writers of Star Trek etc. like to predict the future of thousands of years ahead. Man did set foot on the moon after thousands of years. But is it just as easy to measure the earth in 2.5 steps, swallow the moon, let the river Ganges land on your head or a human being able to give birth to thousands in an instant or be able to span the earth, heavens and seas in an instant - we are not there yet. Were we there already - I doubt very much.

That's like saying - they dug every where in India and they did not find any wires in India - that means there was already wireless in India in the past.

When Sri Ram returned back to Ayodhya with Sita mata and all other worriers who helped him fighting against Ravana , he gave all the warriers some or the other gift but he did not give anything to Hanumaan . Sita mata noticed it and she gave him a pearl nackless , after some time she saw Hanumaanji was busy breaking all the pearls . she got angry she said ' I gave you such a valuable nackless and you are breaking it , why are you doing so ?'

Do you know what did Hanumaan answered her ?

he said " I am searching for Ram in each pearl if there is no Ram in it ,it is of no use to me "

and the answer to your question is if there is Ram in you, you will believe in Ramayana and Ram .for that you dont have to look for proof, your soule has the answer .

We dont have evidence that it is real. What evidence did Valmiki have when he wrote that book. I am not saying we should not believe in God, but we cant say that those events just took place because this guy wrote it down.
