Well I'm no bed mattress expert but I'd pick one which feels comfortable and is well made with a good money back guarantee for just incase.
I prefer solid but soft, lol whenever I have bought a new mattress or bed with mattress I jump on it to get rid of the stiffness.

Firmness, bouncyness, resilience and springy-rebound action after the lights go out and the covers go up and the unbuttoned shirts go down.
All in all I prefer a firm mattress, but sometimes it has to be really soft and considered demonic by orthopedic surgeons . . . we all need to relax and revl in hedonism, every now and then.

I prefer the pillow top kind which I was blessed with having for 6 months of my life, and also cursed with because it spoiled me... and no other bed is good enough. Someday.... I WILL have another, and noone will take it from me, ever!

Soft, squishy, memory foam. That way I can just let the bed do the work of finding the comfy spot.
