Your best bet: go to Home Depot or Lowes, ask the service people there, they'd be glad to help you and can give you a hands on show of putting these pieces together. It's really easy.

The ready-made kits are easy to install yourself. The custom work definitely requires an experienced pro since some of the cuts require special calculation, and the varying densities of wood may also be a difficult proposition.

If you can use a table or circular saw, a measuring tape, hammer & nails, then you have the skills required. Measure twice, cut once, nail where there are studs in the wall. Cover with a nice top molding and you are done (unless you paint it).
Sounds easy huh?
Good luck
