"Clever" doesn't mean "selfish," it just means you have an ability to do something well, usually something that requires thinking. Or at least craftiness... a slightly different thing that alludes to being a bit sly.

It's not clear-cut whether selfish is always either bad or good to me...
Sometimes a person has to be a bit selfish to get the things done that he/she wants to do... for example they have to make time to sit and write, so they tell others to please stay away for a while if they can. That may seem selfish, but is necessary to the writer.

If a person has all the food in the house, and there are other hungry people there but the person won't share the food, that's what I'd consider a bad form of selfishness.

The call on whether selfishness is good or bad is decided by seeing if it hurts others or not, in my opinion. Hurting others, bad. Taking care of self but not hurting others, okay. I hope this is helpful to you.

It depends because being clever can mean you think you are better than other people and can achieve more than them but on the other hand a clever person can also help others to achieve more for themselves. Being selfish is not a good thing because it usually means thinking about yourself, which may leave other people to feel hurt and left out.

Clever does not mean the same thing as selfish. Selfish people don't help others.

Being clever is absolutely not being selfish. You could be clever in solving a maths problem or analysing solution for a particular situation. That's not being selfish.
Being clever is a boon gifted only to few and its up to one how he or she uses this boon.
Its not good to be selfish as the way we think or treat others the others will ultimately think about us or treat us in the same way!

This is one of what are known as ' Non - Useful Generalisations . ' And like all generalisations , not true .
One's intelligence can , & must be used for the betterment of others . Also , as someone so rightly points out , being selfish need not go hand-in-hand with being clever -- the unintelligent can be as selfish as anybody else !

Cunning, which some people say is a type of 'clever', is usually using your intelect for you to get ahead, without giving a second thought to those around you. In this way it is bad because you could be using it to help others too, but its good because you are helping yourself, (better then apathy).
If you are clever you would help those around you too, not just yourself, this is true cleverness, need i say Edison?
