You can try the book :The Far Pavilions, by M. M. Kaye.
The story of an Englishman brought up as an Hindu and his passionate , buit dangerous love for Juli, an indian princess.
Or the books of Lois McMaster Bujold:
Cordelia Naismith Series
1. Shards of Honor (1986)
2. Barrayar (1991)
Cordelia Naismith, Betan Survey Captain, was expecting the unexpected: hexapods, floating creatures, odd parasites... She was not, however, expecting to find hostile humans on an uninhabited planet. And she wasn't really expecting to fall in love with a 40-plus barbarian known to cosmopolitan galactics as the Butcher of Komarr. Will Mother ever understand? And can such an odd beast as love survive an interplanetary war?
Or the books of Dan Simmons:
1. Hyperion (1989)
2. The Fall of Hyperion (1990)
3. Endymion (1995)
Hyperion Cantos (omnibus) (1995)
4. The Rise of Endymion (1997)
On the world of Hyperion, the mysterious Time Tombs are opening. And the secrets they contain mean that nothing--nothing anywhere in the universe--will ever be the same.

A collection of short stories called "The Toughest Indian in the World" by Sherman Alexie. (he is Native American himself and a very good storyteller... and he's written a lot!)
"Grendel" by John Gardner. (a great 'new' perspective on the old Beowulf tale... I put new in quotes because the book isn't new)
"A Book Dragon" by Donn Kushner. (an all time fave, but it's out of print and hard to find... yet still keep an eye out, it's well worth it!)
I like many stories by the sci-fi folks Ursula K. LeGuin ("Left Hand of Darkness," and "The Wizard of Earthsea" trilogy in particular, though the one mentioned is the best of that threesome), and by Isaac Asimov (who wrote a zillion stories) and by Philip K. Dick (a speedster who wrote at an unimaginable pace with great variety and stories and then died young... somewhat like the master writer Poe)
"Interview with a Vampire" is still my favorite for that genre, by Anne Rice...
oh and I liked "The Hobbit" the best by Tolkien, too!
Happy reading!

turg143 may have something there, but I find the story-line very weak and there are too many characters in it.
Try some of Michael Morecocks books. Start off with the Elric books (ask at your local library or bookstore) or his Eternal Champion series. Well worth a read. And another read. :-)
