This means to give equal attention to the performance as well as the time. Just as you are supposed to "pace yourself" for a marathon, you shouldn't go all out and run too fast at the start of the race only to lose all your energy at the homestretch. During the typing test, this means you mustn't type too fast at the beginning and commit a lot of errors or lose gas towards the end of the test. Speed plus accuracy is what they're looking for :-), not just one or the other.

In the early 80's, yes with a local agency rather than a larger chain. In another part of the UK. I've been with an agency for over 12 months and so far they've left messages on my mobile (I told them I didn't have a signal where I live, so got the message several days later. The job had gone by then), but that didn't matter, I was offered a position as a production operative, which was miles away. Useless as I hadn't registered for that sort of work anyway! I ought to be doing their job.

Typing tests usually have time limits. To pace yourself has something to do with the time element, so you can type everything within the time limit. It means type at a consistent pace. For instance, if you're typing too "slowly but surely" at the start and ending up otherwise, you'll have to pace yourself :)

Hand eye coordination. You want to be typing what you are seeing or hearing. The tester probably felt you would reduce the number of mistakes by slowing down a bit. She was just telling you to relax.

Pace, usually has do do with speed, so you might have been typing too fast or too slow.
