I have had a comparatively boring life but am still here. The question is, who was right, which was the best course.

I guess that it as personal choice really.
From nature's perspective it is all about procreation. If your friends didn't manage that then they were not successful and could be considered to have been failures.
On the other hand, your friends probably gave people who knew them many happy and exciting moments and memories, so there is a counter balance .
Nature needs all parts of the spectrum to be filled in in order to keep on operating successfully.
In your case, you have so far been able to pass on collective wisdom simply by continuing to be alive.
Have to say that I feel your life style comes out on top.
And hey! The magical journey through life can never truly be boring. It is all in the details!!!!

There is no best, only what is right for you. Are you regretting that you have lived a mundane life? Make a list of what you want to do, and get started. You dont have to be wild and excessive to the point of death in order to have fun and live an exciting life.

Its not something we have any control over, some wild people survive to a ripe old age they drive the highways and byways of Cumbria sorry ( Freudian slip) life leaving chaos and confusion behind them. They have done so all their lives and will continue to do so untill the end.

Well the question is how do you feel about living a "boring" life? BTW, I live a boring life too. But I am happy I have not made too many crazy life changing decisions

If you are talking about drug and alcohol abuse then these 'really wild friends' simply chose a quick way of killing themselves. Self poisoning has never struck me as either wild or excessive, but just plain dumb.
If your 'really wild friends' were mountain climbers, test pilots or motorcycle racers who risked their lives to achieve something amazing, and died trying, then i would say they knew the risks and took their chance to do something they loved.
Personally i have never wanted to risk my life to climb the highest or go the fastest, i just want to be happy - and doing those things wouldn't make me happy.

It really depends what you want from life.
If you can look back and think I did OK and got what I wanted out of it, then fair enough.
If however you feel you were too cautious and didn't do what you wanted, then you might regret it.
Moderation is OK if that is what you want, but more important is balance so you can enjoy being immoderate when you want to be.

I think it is a matter of balance. I have always tried to have fun and only take calculated risks that will not result in harm to myself or any living thing.
In about forty years or more I will know if my way was the best.

Depends what you like about life.
If your into action and suspense then im sure your friends wouldnt have regretted a day in their life.
If you dont like the action and suspense then you would think the same..
