I know this is going to sound so stupid but I have a really bad phobia. Im deathly afraid of spiders. We recently moved house and its a very old house, the problem is its full of them and they are not the small ones, they are huge and they seem to be everywhere. I am so terrified im seriously considering moving house again, sometimes I have to go and stay the night at my moms because Im so scared. Im constantly on the edge of my nerves and I cant sleep at night because I have terrible nightmares. I know they cant hurt me but I cant help it, it makes me feel ill and its very debilitating.
What can I do to either:
Stop them getting in, or Get over my phobia?
Please help.

Hypnotherapy!! I run an alternative health clinic & my 2 hypnotherapists treat this phobia very frequently. It's a quick one to deal with & is very successful. Look for a well qualified & reputable practitioner in your area. Good luck.

You need to find a way to deal with your phobia. Unfortunately spiders will be in whatever house you move to. The reason they are in the one you've moved to is because the house has been vacant for a while and not dusted of cobwebs. Have a bit of a spring-clean. Get some mates in to help. You can also get some insect spray to kill them with. Remember though they are good to have in your home (obviously not taking over) because they eat all the flies and stuff. Superstitiously some cultures believe they will result in a lot of wealth.

I used to be terrified of spiders. What I did was buy this huge rubber ugly beast of a spider and keep in on my desk at work (freaked everyone out). I also have little plastic ones dotted around. What this did was not get rid of the phobia but I now tolerate them and if I see one, I still catch my breath but I am not afraid to go up to them and kill them.

Good luck.

Have you thought about calling a pest company and ask if they can spray but also find the source of so many spiders. They must be getting in somewhere. Getting over a problem as common as being afraid of spiders would take professional therapy. Call a pest company and get help in eliminating them. Then get one of those pest spray cans that shoot straight lines to the insect. Even if it's for another insect besides spiders it would still kill them. Good luck and hope you can at least control so many being in your house. Do you have a lot of bushes or ivy around your house can bring in lots of spiders. Maybe you can find a handyman or a friend help you clear them from being too close to the house.

You won't be able to stop them getting in unless you hermetically seal your house up...but then you won't be able to go outside at all or open any windows or doors..the oxygen in your house will start to diminish and you'll eventually suffocate.
So the next best option is to try to get over your phobia....Arachnophobia is quite common but needs to be tackled correctly...hypnosis could help..aversion therapy is another way of possibly reducing your phobia. You'll need to do a bit of research as this seems to be quite a debilitating situation.
A good starting point though is that there are no venomous spiders natural to the UK and they are much more frightened of you than you are of them.
If there was a fight between even the weediest human and the biggest spider then the person would win every time. All it needs is a phone book dropped on it and it's dead.

You will never be able to stop a spider getting into a house. It is impossible.

If you move you may have a better place with less spiders but you will not be able to avoid them.

I don't like them either and am 'scared' but not to the point of nightmares. I would suggest contacting your GP or a clinic where they can help with phobias so you can get some help.

All the best

I can sympathise with you here....I hate the damned things, and I find the long hose of the vacuum cleaner quite handy, at least the longer the better, I suck em up in that. I go around the house once a week de cob-webbing the ceilings and any where that may be a bit dusty. You could go for a course of hypnotherapy if its really upsetting you, it works for some.
Treat yourself to a mosquito net which you can buy from IKEA if it helps you. You can always sew pretty sequins and butterflies on it, and make out its part of the decoration, but you and I know different sssshhh....hope that helps!

my brother is a dirty big black spider. I am wondering how he will do at the hospital with the lookers now I am not there. I hope they all hate him. He is better now but is pretending to be sick so he can screw this nurse Suzi. If she ever did this I would kill her and never forgive her. Don't understand him at all. He has no respect or understanding of women. He even tried to touch my sister when she was young. Me and my mum were playing with him the other day and he was honestly saying he wanted to have sex with me. I said would u like pickles to go with that. He needs to be in a sexual problem place. H e will rape somebody.Male patients in that hospital should always get the male nurses first and only a female when no one else availbae. The problem with that place is that it is run by men who want to screw the nurses as much as some of the patients do.One patient Scott gets ignored. I had to say to him I will be your visitor. One patient Bree is ignored , she spends her days at home and goes into the hospital at night for help and does not get it. There is an older blonde patient who needs to be loved. Is an alcoholic i think. Anyway off my soap box.

Most of the people here are telling you ways to get rid of the spiders. There's really no need to do that--spiders kill and eat bugs that are poisonous and carry diseases (flies and mosquitoes, etc.). You don't say where you live but here in Southern California we have two very poisonous spiders; the Brown Recluse and the Black Widow. I have never seen a Brown Recluse but we have Black Widows all over the place. I will go looking for Black Widows with a can of Raid, but all of the rest of the spiders I leave them be. Spiders are terrified of us and they will try to get away and hide (or they will freeze and hope we don't see them). I used to have some fear of spiders (not a phobia, though). Got tired of that fear, though, so I decided to "face" that fear. I did that by looking for webs and then just observing the spider as it went about it's business--kinda tricky at first because they are terrified of us, they tend to hide. I just watched them and found them to be fascinating little creatures. I kept this up until I lost my fear of them. I still don't like them crawling on me, though; I'll just brush them off without freaking out and smashing them. If some get in the house I just leave them be (because they eat other insects) unless they're Black Widows; those get the Raid. The vast majority of spiders are harmless; they only LOOK menacing. Slow exposure to them will help lessen your intense fear of them. Expose yourself to them on your terms. Observe them from several feet away and slowly get closer to them as your fear lessens (and it will). It's not easy, I know that, but it WILL work.

Well I sympathise with you as I have the same phobia, and after years of sleepless nights I found a device that rids the house of all creepy crawlies. You just plug it in and after a short while they've all moved next door. There are many to chose from and can be found on the net. Just type PEST CONTROL in the search and browse away.

Seek out and tear down all of the spiderwebs you can see and eventually the spiders will move on. They don't like to be disturbed. You may need to do this several times a day. How do I know ? I once moved into an old house that hadn't been lived in for 3 years. It took 2-3weeks, but eventually they dissapeared.

And to the Anti-American answer provided by elsie...get a life. The fear of spiders is universal, AND America does have several poisonous types of spider.

You poor thing. It is a terrible thing to have a phobia and the more you avoid them, the worse it gets. You can get hypnotherapy to help although it can be very expensive. If you live near a zoo they often run arachnaphobia classes for people exactly like you. They teach you about spiders and after several sessions work up to you touching them, holding them and get over your fear - the link for London Zoo's one is here:

Phobias are not rational but just keep telling yourself that spiders in the UK can not hurt you. They are more scared of you. Arachnaphobia is very common (think of Miss Muffet!) and you are not alone. I really think you need to seek help from somewhere because it is affecting your life if you really feel the need to move house. This is not acceptable and you need to get your phobia under control now.
