Uc Berkeley Reputation

There is no question about it: UC Berkeley is the greatest public university in the world! Heck, a lot of us would even venture to say Berkeley is the best in the world (but we are the students and alumni, so we are a little biased)!

Berkeley has a storied history. We are the flagship of the University of California. We have been leaders for years in the fields of chemistry (we have our own elements on the periodic table! Berkelium Bk 97), literature, computer science (Cal's Inktomi was a predecessor to Google), mathematics, statistics, physics and so much more. Cal also has an interesting campus history. We started the free speech movement. We epitomized the countercultural spirit of protest and social activism. The legacy carries on today with students leading who are fighting for the causes they believe in. The students at Berkeley are a diverse lot: diverse in experiences, opinions, interests, socioeconomic background, and yes, even race.

Graduate programs at Berkeley are top notch. Berkeley has top 10 doctoral/professional programs in business (Haas), law (Boalt), computer science, public health, english, history, mathematics and engineering.

One great thing that sets us apart from the other elite universities is the price tag. For the price of a year at USC, you can have 4 years at Berkeley (I know this from experience: 3 semesters of grad school at USC cost more than my undergrad degree at Cal). Out of state students can file for state residency after a year. But even our non-resident tuition is less than Stanford's standard rate.

And if you care for sport, Cal football is currently ranked #10 in the nation. We've had plenty of Olympians over the years. And our rugby team is second to none.

UC Berkeley is easily one of the top universities in America. I don't know if its considered "Ivy League" (Stanford is if memory serves) but it's about as close as it comes to it if it isn't. Berkeley is an elite university and as such is hard to get into, for undergrad or graduate programs. They have utterly rock solid science and liberal arts programs, and many famous alumni. The beginning of the student activist and civil rights movements of the 60s has its roots at Berkeley, and it became so fervent that even then Gov. Ronald Reagan considered the students a threat. (Students protesting for civil rights.......sounds like something Reagan wouldn't like.)

Absolutely stellar. USNWR ranks them as the top public university in the United States. In fact, like several other top schools, they are easily recognized by just part of the name - "Berkeley" is all that needs to be said.

add: they and Stanford are not "Ivy" - the Ivies are Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Princeton, U Penn, and Yale. All rank in USNWR as higher than Berkeley - none are publics. Most people would agree that they're in the same educational class as the Ivy colleges.

Its the best university out of the group of colleges that form the University of California system. Nationally, the college ranks 21st, just behind Vanderbilt University. In California, Berkeley is the third best national university--Stanford and Caltech are the only schools that outrank it. In graduate level studies, the school is in the top ten in its engineering, law, and business programs. Of these, engineering and business programs are also offered in undergraduate studies, which are also ranked in the top ten for most competitive undergraduate majors in their field. In general, berkely is an excellent and well-rounded educational institute.

Having never attended the University, what I have heard of it is that the students make positive differences in the world as students (not just after they graduate). They take stands on lots of issues and make a positive contribution to the quality of life of many people. That's what comes to my mind when I hear the name.
