Low self esteem, depression...
There are hundreds of reasons why a person could view themselves in a negative light.

It's a vicious pattern. For a very long time I viewed myself negatively and actually hated myself. I continued to do this even after the depression lifted. I was just used to doing this and couldn't imagine doing anything else. Well, I no longer see myself in a completely negative light. My self-esteem has improved.
And if I haven't answered your question... it's 'cause of insecurity, and it's habit forming...

I think that some people are given negative views early on and that's their primary mental diet. As you think it-so it is-has a lot of truth in it. I also believe that if a person has not experienced much positive success in life that tends to feed into their negative sense of feelings.

For some, and it was true of me, when you are fed negative thoughts (input) about yourself constantly, you begin to believe it. You're told a 'C' in Math isn't good enough; you're a "sinner"; try harder, you can do better; that's not good enough, etc.
If there is no praise (especially for a child), what else is there to go by?
But, I grew up; found out they were wrong; and moved on with my life....and I'm just fine the way I am.

Possibly because they have had people in their lives from when they were born seeing them negatively..so they don't know any other way to look at themselves.

Maybe they feel that way because they never hear good things about themselves from others.
