I can print other documents on the network printer but nothing from word. When I go to try and print the printer list is empty and the troubleshooter says there is no network connection. There must be as we can print excel etc from the shared folder. ??is it a problem with word itself?

The link below is entitled:
How to troubleshoot printing problems in Word 2002 (Part 1)
but there are links at the top of the page to other versions of Word.

Hope this sorts it for you!

You probably have several printers defined, first check which is your default printer. On Xp you have several ways (of course) to get to the printers depending on your setup.

Click start, if you can see "printers and faxes" then click this else go to control panel and if in category view, click "printers and other hardware" .
then click "printers and faxes"

This will show all printers that are configured with 3 lines of text by each. The top line is printer name, the second is the number of files waiting to print, (see further down), third line usually says ready but is not necessarily true. One of the printers will have beside it a tick in a circle, this is your default printer. Prints will go to this unless another is specified.

To change another printer to default, right click on the icon, click on set as default printer.

Verify correct paper size,
right click on printer icon,
left click properties
left click printing preferences
left click advanced
check or change paper size to match printer paper.

To print to a different printer without changing default setting,
eg to a colour when the default is black only, instead of using the printer icon on top tool bar, left click file (top LH corner), click print, then click on the printer you wish to use, then any other options, then print.

You may need to check the paper size settings in word. Open word,
left click file,
left click page setup, near the top is a paper size box. Word defaults to American size "letter", If your printer is an A4 printer then change size to match paper in your printer.

If this is your problem then you will probably see a number other than 0 of files waiting to print that you will need to clear.

Double click printer icon, this will list all files, click on the top one, click on document then click on delete, wait for file to vanish. Repeat for all other files.

Some printers have an option to auto resize between letter and A4, check your printer manual.
