For me my favorite actor could be the next Denzel but is still undervalued today. I'm talking about Eamonn Walker, he played "Kareem Said" in HBO's OZ. He even played Othello, and very good btw.
Another actor was one that is not alive but should have been better praised for his work was Raul Julia.

Julia was very well praised for his work.

What they look for in movie actors is bankability more than anything else.

Gloria Foster is another example. Well known and praised for her stage work but almost unknown to movie audiences as was her replacement (in the Matrix Franchise) when she died, Mary Alice, who had worked with Foster.

Reeves, on the other hand, has proven his bankability long ago.

Cuba Gooding worked his way up from one liners to co-star status.

Philip Seymour Hoffman has had a huge stage career and a huge TV career but usually as heavies, side men and comic relief. Even after carrying Capote it's hard to say what his motion picture status is. He's worked steady in theater and TV for the last 15 years, which is unheard of in someone with "no name."

William Petersen had only a modest career in feature films and was hardly a household name until he moved to TV and CSI.

Marg Helgenberg, on the other hand, made a big splash with China Beach (she coped an Emmy on that show) and then moved to features with the Species franchise and then back to TV with CSI and became even bigger.

There's tons of them. The reason isn't weird. They just never did that one project that put them over the top. I also think Gary Oldman is the best actor in the world. And Crispin Glover is incredible too. Taurean Blaque from "Hill Street Blues" was amazing. After the show ended he decided to do theater almost exclusively. Had all the dough he would ever need. For stars who are underated as actors, how about Val Kilmer, Mel Gibson and Brad Pitt? Too pretty to be taken seriously. Make your own list.

We all have our favorite underrated actors. Mine is Gary Oldman. It's not that people don't think these actors are good, it's just that they end up turning in great performances in critically panned films or otherwise forgettable shows, or even a great performance in a great show that was just as expected but all they got was a pat on the back for a job well done. No award.

i know exactly where you are coming from.. i have two good friends who are in the theatre business and they are not so much underrated, its just always a case of fame over talent!! all they are interested is money! they cast people for their fame even if they are god awful, like when our friend was in guys and dolls she missed out on main character because they chose Claire Sweeney! she was awful beond belief! cant sing, cant act and cant dance! but when my friend went on as understudy she got bombarded with letters asking why she has not been permanently chosen for the role!!

These actors chose to star in films that werent very popular which in turn made them not very popular. They need to try to be in more popular movies, but I am sure that isnt easy.
