I think of the four stringed instruments in a common orchestra (violin, viola, cello, bass) the cello sounds like the violin (but is played in a lower range, obviously). I think the viola and the bass are the most mellow-sounding instruments. The cello is beautiful, but like the violin, it can sound a little tight in the upper range, and can sound a little dull when plucked.

Euphoric. It is a beautiful instrument. It has a deep, robust, yet warm and gentle sound. Here is my favorite cello piece. Bach's Cello Suite No.1-Prelude played by Mischa Maisky.

the cello is commonly considered the instrument whose timbre is closest to the human voice, hence it's soothing quality to our ears. like any stringed instrument, the overall sound quality is determined by the size of the "box" or body of the instrument and the type of wood used. string diameter also comes into play for the overall sound, too. for an analogy of the sound the cello makes, imagine a male tenor singing in the mid to lower regions of his vocal range without lyrics, or listen to a YoYo Mah recording.

If you've heard Jack Sparrow theme (his actual theme by Hans Zimmer), it is that instrument that sounds really quirky and could be part of a jig. It usually appears whenever Jack appears or is about to do something dumb. If you're not sure, here's a link of a piece being performed on a cello:

Sounds very deep and wooden, doesn't it?

I'm sorry to say that, but the only word I know for a Cello is:
awful.
