It is a fact. We are not only going backwards, but utterly running to total catastrophe.
China, U.S.A. and India are poluting what has been left of air, and they are so shortsighted that they cannot realize that their "progress" is turning against all lives on the planet.
Ofcourse the disaster of the planet had started to be produced almost 50 years ago, but these three countries came to place the grave stone on our hopes for some change.
Scientists confirm that we are the last generation to have known the planet the way it is.

It is not only fair,it is safe to say the world is not improving. It is sad,but true.I think that in 100 years the world won't exist anymore,at least not the way it is now...And the worst thing about it is that people know this, but they choose not to think of it or not to do something about it.The mentality of everyone is:I can't change things on my own,so why even bother...What they don't understand is that if everyone does what he can do(the smallest things can make a difference, for example to change one of your light bulbs with an energy saving light bulb,to recycle,to switch of the appliances and the lights in the rooms you aren't using,to use a fan instead of the air-condition etc) something might change and we wouldn't be able to stop or reverse the catastrophe we al ready caused, but we can at least slow its process and made the world a little more tolerant for the next generations to live in...

I don't know what you really call "improvement", what "becoming better people" means and what is the "goal" really. Its all a perception (yours) of course.
I do know, however, that the increasing size of human population, its culture and the side products of it cannot support a sustainable growth in the future. Which means we will vanish soon. Whether we are bad, good, have reached our goals, improved...or not..!
I don't think my cat, a tree or a cockroach gives a damn...
And in principle, some people are perfectly fine with it. We will not be the first nor even the last. Life will go on. Whether in this or any other form.

The world is perfect the way that it is--and the way that it isn't.
It's our view or perception of the world that makes it what it is today. And that perception is colored and distorted by an insidious, cunning entity that almost all of us carry around. It's called the EGO.
The EGO is what makes us think we are separate from everything and everyone. It is the lie that we are told from the day the body is born until the day the body dies by parents, siblings, peers, advertisers, and society. And, the EGO helps us believe those lies by causing us to live into them.
Once you start breaking yourself away from EGO, it loses its grip on you slowly but surely, until we DO become better people--towards ourselves and others. And the planet as a whole.

Throughout history, great civilizations have disappeared, often for unknown reasons. So, maybe the same problems you mentioned happened to them too! I am really sad to see that decline but there is not much hope for our future left! And to worsen things, this time greed might even destroy our mother Earth...I hope she will be strong again and fight back!

In many ways the world is improving....as u say, in science and technology. But what ever happened to "respect"? I am talking about respect for others as well as self-respect and respect for the environment. What ever happened to good manners? And what ever happened to filotimo? In those areas we are regressing rather than progressing.

One must not confuse the word evolution with improvement. The world and its people are evolving, meaning "changing".
I'd rather doubt that we are "improving".

nothing will ever change, everything is the same with the difference of new technology.
pain, sorrows, violence , corruption, empty promises, lies
you name it.
it depends to each and every one, to chose how to live there liefs. and i tell you the degree of temptation in almost everything is too high, so for us humans the moment we open our eyes is struggle till we go to bed.

It is true, but it is coming also from the consciousness, and how much influenced we are by what it is offered or sold in front of our eyes..
The world is improving in science, but not in identity..Because identity is lost and we are so ''degenerated''in our consciousness by this...
