The males are boys and the females are girls? ;~)

Seriously, they have no external sex differences of any reliability, and if you don't believe me, then:

I have just looked at my book of tropical fish and I came to one; Cascudo;panaque;Armadillo DE RIO. Hypotomus Plecotomus. Size 2ft and it has a sailfin. Sex difference not know and has never been tank bred. You might be able to tell if you put another one with it and watch what happens.

some plecs are easier to sex than others, it depends what species of plec you have!

bristlenose plecs are easy, the males have big bristles on their nose, the females have none or only a few.

with all plecs the females are broader in the mid-section than males. and in larger plecs you can see the sex from the shape of the anal fins when they're stuck to the glass.

first work out what species of plec you have, then go about trying to sex it.
