Because there are many ideological strands of communism. Some communists fought against the Soviet/Stalinist version in Russia and Eastern Europe even before McCarthyism took root in the States - and were sent to the Gulags and died.
Even if capitalism is not a failure it will always engender some injustices and those who dissent. As Globalism increases its hold it would not surprise me to see a revival of Marxism as the guiding ideology for that dissent.

Over a quarter of the world's population still lives in communist countries. I would hardly call that a 'failure'. It really doesn't matter. ALL government is corrupt. If you don't think so, take a look at how corrupt our own government is.

The first video is a Congressional hearing. Donald Rumsfield apologizes to some members of Congress for losing track of 2.3 TRILLION dollars. That's nearly the entire budget of our country for a year...and the Pentagon can't track the money.
The second video is a follow-up, several years later. The situation has obviously been swept under the rug.
How 'free' is our country? The main gripe about communism is that the people don't have a say in the government. Well...I say that ANY government is corrupt, and our system proves it.

The real relevant question is why do americans support communist china and help them oppress and tyrannize their people? Gary is correct. what we have going on right now in USA is rampant out of control capitalism...and that is a failure. What we have before reagan was capitalism balanced with compassion morality and understanding that the nation has to have balance to be truly at its best. That balance is long gone now.
