Average is about 3 years, most die long before that due to neglect, disease and fatal betta myths.
High quality bettas that are well taken care of can live up to 7 or so years.

If cared for properly, they can live 2-3 years. I have one now that is getting close to 4 years in a 20 gallon planted tank with 6 cory cats.

As much as I know about freshwater fighter fish (bettas) that they live for 3-5 years in a minimum 2.5 gallon tank with filters.
A LFS employee once told me "if they live 2 years, that is great".

It's called a Betta and they can live 2-5 years with the proper care. It depends on what age they were when they were purchased from the pet store. Typically males from a pet store are 9-12 months old because that's when their finnage is full and attractive but females are younger because they don't have the finnage that the males do.
I keep mine in tanks with proper filtration because I feel that keeping them in a bowl is cruel. Bettas do best in clean water and any uneaten food should be removed.

I have 2 males and they are now 6 years old...they are in individual tanks with filtration.
If you take good care of them they can live a long and healthy life.
If you see signs of illness and disease cure it promptly!
Normally the Siamese fighting fish live to be 2-5 years old.
Male have lived 10 years or longer

They normally live a good 3 years. But unless you are seriously taking it to fight with other fighting fishes, it will surly be more short lived.
Haha.

i agree with the 3 years but if it is very aggressive with frequent fanning or easily agitated they are said to have a shorter lifespan
