It is because we are a nation of laws! And the laws have been privitized for profit. Prisons make money when they are full!.

4% of population, 25% of Criminals and 98% of the worlds lawyers.

D.A.'s have a 97% conviction rate average nationaly!

There is no way they can be right that much! Our system has been manipulated to favor the system and prisons!

Just assuming that your statistics are correct, let me ask you this. What other Country less than 250 years old has changed the world ( including yours ) with the technology and advances in science, entertainment and medicine? You, where ever you are, are using the English language on a world wide web using statistics that are released by this free country and England. An open society needs not pretend that there are no criminals in it's population. Does this to you mean that it is "demon land"? If so are you not participating in the fruits of this Demon Land?
Finally, where do you think that criminals belong but in prison? At least all of them in a prison has received a trial in this country. So I can only suggest that the 75% of this country and 4% of the worlds population, that are not crininals, has to be very impressive bunch of people, of all races and creeds that constitute the United States of America.

a reporter in Lexington K,Y, did some research on why America has so many people locked up, more than China, North Korea or any other nation in the world, his conclusion was our country has passed over a million laws since 1955 and our courts have become so corrupt that only the rich can get justice, when a man goes into court in the U,S he is automatically guilty unless he has big bucks as O,J, did, we have a 98,8 % conviction ratio, the highest in the world and we also have the most severe penalty's than any other nation, and yet we have a lot of people who are yelling for more time for almost anything, many country's don't have half the laws we have, and so many of our laws are plain stupid, America has become a police state, with very little freedom, and what we do have left is continually being gnawed away by our self serving politicians, our country in the past had the most freedom than any country in the world with the best constitution, but, our constitution has been so misused by our courts and society that it is pretty useless now, and for you who claim you still have your freedom are like a ostrich and your head is in the sand,we had freedom in the 50's but not now, we have a law for everything , so don't sneeze or you will be in prison where you say these people belong.
maxx p, these stats have been printed by several different organizations, including amnesty international, their records also say America executes more people than any other country,

Every law passed creats it's collictive of convicted offenders.. the more laws, the more criminals..
That does not make the U. S. a "demon ground'.. it makes the population paranoid of it's own legal enforcement tho.
>ANY< thing in america can be put to public opinion for the purpose of legality... thats the court functionality in affect.

Those statistics are very true. But you also have to look at it this way. We have the most laws for many things we dont just put you to death at the drop of a hat. People go to jail for DUI and posession of marajuana. Pointless crimes like that when theres actual real criminals out there.

Ah, just because the US actually puts criminals in prison, doesn't mean we have more criminals, just that ours are in jail and not out walking the streets.

If you look at the UN data, America is not even in the top 10 in the Violent crime rate.

Britian has one of the highest rate of violent crime in the western world.

most europeans wrongly believe that because america has the highest murder rates, that we hvae higher crime rates in general.

And thats just not true.

You are far more likely to be a victem of crime, in europe than in america.

Because US is a breeding ground and safe haven for criminals. What are you suppose to think when businessmen, politicians, lawyers and athletes are going to prison. These are suppose to be role models, our youth don't stand a chance. Thanks George Bush and the republican party.

Based on whose statistics? Much of the world does not even keep crime statistics, or keep them top secret. But that does not mean that they have no crime.
