Dear Eric,
Recognition of the problem is the first step and you have recognized that you are procrastinating.

The "why" might be that you don't want to risk being turned down--a lot of people see this as rejection--while others just see it as a challenge and go looking for a job someplace else.

I know you find time to be on your computer, but that won't get you a job. Use some of that time and start making the rounds of places. The more you put yourself out there, the more chances you have of getting another job or a new job.

Look seriously at your skills--and then look for jobs where you can use your skills and learn new ones. Is there any possibility that you could work your way into a better position in the store where you work now? My daughter has worked her way into management with Publix over the last 4 years and the pay also improved.

Get out of the chair, be your own best friend--and work at getting another position--you can do it--you just need to get going! I believe you can do this.

More and more education, better education, a better network of friends, access to more powerful people, and so training to become more and more astute, working hard, ever harder... these seem to be the best recommendations for a career, any career.

But, as for procrastination, stopping or not stopping procrastination, some days ago I read that "a strong soul calmly adjourns until tomorrow that which he urgently would like to do today". I was used to self-admonitorily think of the proverb: "Do not leave aside for tomorrow that which you can do today".

A simpler life with less worries, and with affectionate friendships that do not cost much pecuniary, and less working hours, and more reflection in order to seek to become more astute, and a better rationalization of one's own material needs, also making them less urgent ... might lead to a more healthy life, to a better life, and so also open the way onto a brighter working career.

Good luck!

Procrastionator huh! I know the feeling For One you need to break your habit of putting things off to the last minute or you will NEVER get it accomplished! As far as looking for another job you need to continue to work at the current job, meanwhile you could be looking into another job. Just look around for places that are hiring and accepting Applications there are plenty of jobs out there you just have to look and keep searching until you find it so don't give up!

First of all, few jobs are "low maintenance" and all come with stress and responsibility so don't fool yourself into thinking the next job will be easy. We never know until we get into the job and work it, what all comes with it as far as stress.

To quit procrastinating, make up a list of all the things you WANT to do on one list and on another list, write down everything you NEED to do.

Then go through and number them in the order of their importance, keeping each list separate from each other.

Buy one of the dry-erase boards with dry-erase markers and hang it in a room you frequent every day and put both lists on there (one in red for the NEED to do and the other in blue).

Then attack the NEED list and as you do them, erase that chore and go to the next one. The WANT list is one you can do each day as needed, a little at a time, and you can erase those as you go along and add others as they come up, just like you will on the NEED list.

But the main thing you need to do is change your attitude or none of the above will work. Make up a list of things you have to do each day and do them so you get in the habit of taking care of things right away. Much of it is just retraining yourself and making yourself do things so it becomes a habit.

As far as the job, this also has to do with a change of attitude. Realize that none of us are perfect but we all have good qualities so make a list of your good qualities and keep those in mind as you apply for jobs. You have to get out of your "comfort zone" or nothing will change and sometimes, that is one of the hardest things for us to do but once done, you will be so happy that you did.

Good luck to you. Try this starting tomorrow and each day after and watch good changes come about in your life :)

Fear destroys more hopes than reality ever can. Make a plan, then carry it out. If you decide to apply to one new job each week, you'll never get to it because you can always to it "tomorrow." On the other hand, if you decide to go apply Monday before noon, it's much easier to push yourself to do it. Plan out the steps you need to take, on paper, then assign them a time and stick to it! Go get a new job, fella!
