Hey guys I have a full time job and go to college but I'm still really low on money. I dont really have time for a full or part time second job, but I could squeeze in few extra hours late at night. Bartending fits perfectly but the problem is that I've never bartend before. Ive worked as a server and busser in many restaurants, and I know a lot of popular drinks. Does anyone think I can make the cut, or what do you guys thiink I should do to make myself more qualified

I you live in a college town, I would start as a bar back. The turn over rate in college towns is pretty fast, so you would have the opportunity to move up pretty quick. Most places that hire bartenders with out experience are low volume places. A good bar back will make 10-20% of the bars tips so it's not a bad gig.

Think outside the box for a second.

There are other late night jobs, including shop assistant, fast food, or service stations. But bartending is pretty easy to find, and the tips can be good (when people drink a lot they tip more than they should).

So how to get the job. Keep thinking outside the box for a moment. Bars employ waiters (they serve food), bouncers and people to pick up empties and clear ashtrays.

Most people start with a bar tending course (from a few days to a few weeks) while others just apply. You could just work in a bar for free for a while and learn how to do stuff, then get better work.

Start at the most basic bar you can find (no cocktail stuff, just beer, spirits and espresso...yes most bars do coffee now).

It is easy come easy go work, so there are always opportunities.

are there any i day courses you have to do in order to handle and serve alcohol responsibly. in Australia anyone wanting to bar-tend must have an RSA a responsible serving of alcohol licence. is there something similar where you are it might be worth checking, otherwise you should go for it, good luck.
