Since your given the perimeter recall the formula for perimeter...
P = 2L + 2W

The perimeter was given as 144 meters... substitute...
144 = 2L + 2W

Next... the length is 3 times the width which can be represented as 3W... substitue L = 3W

144 = 2(3W) + 2W

Simplify
144 = 6W + 2W

Simplify further
144 = 8W

Solve for W
144 = 8W
----- ------
8 8

18 = W

So the width = 18 meters...
now to find the length...

Recall L = 3W

Substitute W = 18
L = 3(18) = 54

The length was found to be 54 meters and the width 18 meters...

Therefore the dimensions are....

54 meters by 18 meters

apply this formula:
perimeter = 2 L +2 B(width)
144 = 2 (L+B)
but L = 3 B (given)
thus 144 = 2 (3 B + B)
THUS 144 = 2(4 B)
THUS 144 = 8B
THUS 144 /8 = B
THUS 18 = B

NOW L = 3 B
THUS L = 3 X 18 = 54
thus the lenght of the rectangle is 54 mts and the width is 18 mts.
cros cheeck by the formula P = 2 L + 2B
P = 2 x 54 + 2 x 18
P = 108 + 36
P = 144

1. x-y=15 x+y=73 from the first equation: x=15+y substitute that into the second equation and solve for y: 15+y+y=73 2y=73-15 y=29 put that back into either equation and solve for x: x-29=15 x=44 The numbers are 29 and 44 The rest of the problems are solved pretty much the same way. 2. l=3w 2l+2r=144 3. Complimentary angles add up to 180 x=y+60 x+y=180 4. g+2=4/5(b+2) g-4=5/7(b) for "as old as he is" or g-4=5/7(b-4) for "as old as he was" 5. x+y=16 10y+x=10x+y+18 6. n=d-2 (n-1)/(d-1)=3/4 7. m=f-8 m=(5/7)f 8 and 9 you already have the formulas. good luck.

Think of the rectangle as three squares joined together. The squares have 8 sides on the outside of the rectangle. Each one must be 144meters divided by 8 = 18meters. From there it is easy to say 3 times 18 is the length and 1 times 18 is the width.

Let x = length, x/3 = width

Find length:
2(x + x/3) = 144
x + x/3 = 72
3x + x = 216
4x = 216
x = 54

Find width:
= 54/3
= 18

Answer: length = 54, width = 18

Proof:
= 2(54 + 18)
= 2 * 72
= 144

width = w
length = 3w
perimeter = 144

perimeter = 3w + w + 3w + w = 8w

8w = 144
w = 144/8 = 18

Thus the dimensions are 18x54

2(3x+x) = 144

4x = 72

x= 18

so the length is 54m and the width is 18m
