The key in a problem like this is to get you variable (y) on one side by itself. So as you see on one side you have 15 and on the other 5 times y. So to isolate Y, remebering that you allways have to do the same thing to both sides of the equation. You would take and devide both sides by 5. Which would make it 3=y.

*The goal is solving for the "y" variable in the equation.
First: isolate the "y" variable on one side by itself - divide both sides by 5 (when you move a term to the opposite side, always use the opposite sign).
15/5 = 5y/5
15/5 = y
3 = y, or y = 3
