The way that I see it is that if there were no evil in this world two things would happen. We as humans would not appreciate the good that's in the world and how would we know to appreciate what we have if we always had things good?? We would soon take things for granted which in it's self might lead to even worse things because we wouldn't be used to it. When we tend to take things for granted we usually end up treating them or it very badly and that causes it's own problems.

Hi.I think it might have something to do with a certain Angel that rebelled against God,was cast out of Heaven, and wanted revenge by destroying as many souls as possible and convincing them that God was the evil one. So far it seems to have worked .God has given us a choice,Him or the Devil. He does not force us to choose.
I am constantly amazed by some of the answers in this post.
God is getting the blame for starving children. Americans throw away unused table food every day which would feed the worlds starving people many times over.Greed is your answer. The Governments of those starving countries could not care less about their people because they are corrupt ,they expect overseas aid.while they keep all the money for themselves. (I wonder how they came to be like this.?)There are natural disasters all the time which God does not interfere with. But he does not course them to happen. It is how we react to the various situations that is important.God has UNCONDITIONAL LOVE for every human he has ever created and he would like us to do the same.Is there anyone here who has unconditional love to all human kind?Or are you too busy studying the Bible?
To love God is to love every person who has ever lived. If there is only one person in the whole world you do not love, then you do not love God.See ..very simple, but very hard to put into practise.

God is neither loving or infallible as according to The Old Testement God was a destroyer of cities and a supporter of much of the evil but those who do did not believe in God were labeled evil instead and what was done to them was not said to be evil but fightng the forces of evil. The reason God allows evil is God can feel pride and is vain as God wants to be worshipped and so is no different from man and so can fall from Heaven and become a mortal just like Adam and Eve .God should be required to leave The Garden Of Eden but God is a hypocrite. You will find much of the evil done throughout history is done in the name of God or said to be God's will and this is no accident. The Name of God is used to committ evil most often not that of The Devil . To say it was The Devil is to avoid responsibility as it was God and no Devil who commited those crimes so evil of that sort the religious sort is the fault of God if God is used. The rest is the fault of man not having respect for man or ignoring feelings for man calling them evil which is what God does in a different way by saying those who do not believe in God are evil and should be killed or enslaved as well as other things. God says if a soldier rapist believes in him that is all right as to rape women who do not believe in God is good because the women were unbelievers and it is okay to kill the unbeliever men. take your pick of later holy books such as The Bible used on Seven Continents and God used again for the same purpose again God said it was all right to The Spanish, The Arab slave trade in Northern Africa , and The slave trade and well known genocide in South America by The Spanish or portugese and the one in The 19th Century by The U.S army after which forced conversion to God and Christ happened.

I don't have the chapters and verses handy but the Bible clearly states that God created evil. Get a Bible with a concordance and look up all the references to evil and you will find several that say God is the source of evil. (try 1 Kings 22:23 for one) And well he did; if there were no evil there could be no Good.
Also if there were no illness, no pain, no death, no grief, no hardship, etc., nothing but love (someones idea of heaven) then we would all perish from the sameness of boredom! Since there is evil he IS infallible.
Then there is the intractable "problem of evil" for theologians to ponder and what would they have to do if it wasn't for this?
Good luck, good health, peace and love!

I look at some of the answers and it amazes me that free will/ good vs evil etc is the religious answer. I would like to know just what in the hell does thousands dying from aids in africa/ thousands dying from a tsunami and generally being in the wrong place at the wrong time have anything to do with free will and good vs evil. I cannot believe in a God that kills innocent children via starvation and aids is a God that everyone should worship based on blind belief.

Because the only way for that love and infalliability to be felt is for an opposing force to actually exist in its negation. It's the same as life and death. People learn how to live their lives more because they know that they're going to die. It 's the same contrast that fuels the the great design of entropy that keeps this world and the universe spinning with existence.

See
The Problem of Evil. This has been talked about for ages and is a popular topic in all Philosophy Intro classes. I would suggest you sign up for a good philosophy class or read up extensively the sources mentioned in the wikipedia article.

Because he allows us free will. If we were unable to choose whether to respond to him or not, we would be like robots.
If you compare it to human children, if they all responded exactly the same way to everything they would have no personality and we could not interact with them any more than we could interact with a machine.
As a result of his allowing us to have free will, there will be some (many) that choose evil.

If you believe in god then you have to believe that Satan exists, god gave everyone the ability to choose, to make our own decisions, so if you read the bible Satan rebelled and making very bad decisions became the root cause of evil.
