Do something positive. In the sense, up to now you have been only 'lateral'- apparently doing a lot but getting nowhere. You have really not progressed one bit with all your huffing and puffing.
A case in point is when a company shifts personnel around from one department to another telling them that it is 'only a lateral move' - that is, it is in no way to be taken as a promotion, you are not moving up. If you were, it would have been a 'vertical' move.

Depends on context. It can mean to stand, to wake up, or to engage in one of a variety of physical pursuits like mountain climbing or rappelling.

To stand up, because vertical lines, etc. go up and down (think north and south)
To lie down is to "get horizontal." (Think east and west.)
