Here are my steps:
1) everyday disinfect toilet bowls and sinks, take the garbage out, clean the kitchen counters
2) every other day mop your floors (making sure you change the water for each room and use a nice smelling disinfecting floor cleaner), clean shower and tub
3) everyweek sprinkle baking soda on the carpet and let it sit for an hour and vacuum and dust using lemon scented cleaner
4) twice a month clean all windows and doors, dust all plants
5) once a month clean all fans, underneath fridge and washer and dryer, on top of fridge
6) twice a month clean all AC ducts with water and soap
All these will eliminate dust and smells when done in a routine. If you have pets, you need to focus on their areas everyday or at least three times a week. This should help with odors, allergies, and cleaning... Good luck.

try this:
Air Refresher
Servings: 1
Ingredients:
1 cup Baking soda
1/4 cup Ammonia
1 tablespoon Scent Of Your Choice: perfume, lemon extract, vanilla bean extract, or pine oil
16 cups Water
Directions:
1. ** For a quick fix for a stubborn odor, here's a traditional solution that you can customize to your taste.
2. Into a clean gallon size plastic jug pour baking soda, ammonia, and the scent of your choice. Slowly fill with warm water. Label and cap jug. Keep out of the reach of children. Pour small quantities of the solution into pretty containers with spray tops--old perfume containers or atomizers are ideal. Then you can leave the refresher on the counter in rooms where you need it frequently.
3. To Use: Simply mist the air where unpleasant odors abound. Avoid spraying on or near furniture or pets. Wipe up any reside if you overdo, but the mist will not harm anything if you don't soak an item with the mist.Especially AVOID spraying directly on FINE WOOD FURNITURE--The ammonia, scent, or water could harm the finish. 1 gal. Big savings.

some Q's before i share...
do you have pets?
what scent do you like?
do you live alone or you have family?
do you have a wall to wall carpet or wood floors?
if you have pets, they need to be clean too so it's kinda hard to keep fresh and clean ir you have dogs and cats that aren't clean. so you may want to check them.
the scent is entirely up to you, personally i love the scent of apples and citrus, some of my friends like lavender. you may want to check some oils, they are more expensive but they lasts longer than the spray.
you may try the ff:
open your windows for at least 30 minutes daily to let the fresh air in.
empty your trash daily. make sure you also clean the insides of the trash every now & then.
try to eat in the dining area so you won't be spilling any drinks or leaving crumbs everywhere.
i light an incense daily. there are lot of scents available.
i have candles around the house i try to have one scent so it won't confuse my nose. for now everything is apple scented candles.
i use my range hood everytime i cook, if possible, weather permitting, i cook outside to avoid the smell inside the house.
i try to do my loads of laundry once a week ( i live alone) so that i can't smell dirty laundry.
try to change sheets every two weeks and wash them in hot water to kill mites and bugs.
try to have some plants inside the house, the real easy plants so you can have fresh air inside the house.
i hope i was able to help.
good luck.

One way to have a nice clean smelling home is to clean it ! Sadly no spray is going to take the place of a good old fashioned cleaning ! So, go through each room and start wiping things down and dusting.. I tend to use lemon scented products in the kitchen, when I wipe down the appliances, countertops and when I mop.... I use baking soda on my carpets and I vacuum my couches, loveseats on a weekly basis and wash my cushion covers 2x a yr ! So, good luck

Take a look around your house and see what you can eliminate that holds odors. Draperies, carpeting, etc. It makes a world of difference not having alot of fabrics in your home that hold pet odors, cooking odors, smoke, etc. We have hardwoods on our living level and either sheers or toppers on the windows. Just a couple of small throw rugs here and there. Everyone comments on how good the house smells but I don't do anything in particular to make it smell good. Upstairs is carpeted and it has more smells. I want to put hardwoods upstairs, too.

you know what i use is the arm & hammer scented carpet powder, you just sprinkle a little bit on your carpet before you vacuum and it makes the whole house smell great, also the Air Wick automatic air freshener is great because you can set it to how often you want it to spray.
